This mechanically engraved 6mm mild steel plate with compass by Total Industrial Engraving, engraved deep to allow for powder coating was requested to be used as the top platform of a staircase.
We were asked to engrave a piece of 6mm mild steel with a compass and various wording. We were concerned about fixing the plate down because not only was it not square. But it was also larger than our engraving bed. We managed to fix it down and did it from bottom to top. This was to allow us to use the straight edge along the bottom of the plate. The other tricky element was that the plate is being powder coated. Therefore we needed to engrave to between 1 and 2mm. We usually only engrave to a maximum depth of 0.5mm. It took 4 passes over the entire plate to get the required depth. The job was imported using a dxf supplied by our customer. This enabled us to select the cutter width so that the tool path is automatically calculated to ensure full coverage engraving.
The most important thing we find when mechanically engraving, is to ensure that the cutter is ground perfectly, we often see jobs done by other companies that need to be replicated and notice that the engraving is substandard. This is nearly always down to the cutter not being cut properly. We recut the cutter used for this piece several times throughout the engraving to ensure the quality was kept throughout. It can otherwise cause burring and loss of sharpness of the engraving.
