We had a request to produce a laser engraved wood stool Christening gift and couldn't resist sharing the finished article. The lady wanted to bring in a small stool (milking stool). This was with a view to it being a unique gift for her Goddaughter's Christening. Having never engraved a stool before we said we would need to see it before we could offer a quotation.
How did we laser engrave the wooden stool?
When first asked we had the obvious worry of if it would fit into the machine. Once we got over that first hurdle there were a few more, including setting up the positioning of the text. On a positive note at least being a stool it was relatively flat. We set up the text in our software to be around the edge of the seat. This was because the wooden stool dipped down slightly in the centre. This would have caused some variation in the quality of the engraving if we had done it there. The result was just what our customer wanted and we then went on to laser engraved the wooden stool whilst she waited. We were fairly new to engraving wood at the time when we engraved this piece so couldn't have been happier with the result.
Engraving wood is more difficult than many other materials in that because it is a natural product there is a lot of variation between different woods. There can also be some variation within one piece of wood due to knots and grain etc. This means that there isn't just a single setting that can be used to laser engraved all wood so where possible we like to have a test piece that is the same as the main piece(s). Obviously in this particular case that wasn't possible.
